Instrument Care and Humidity Guide

Wood instruments are living, responsive objects. Changes in humidity and temperature directly affect how a guitar looks, feels, and performs over time. Proper care and environmental control are essential to maintaining structural stability and long term playability.

This guide is provided for informational purposes to help owners care for their instruments. It does not expand or modify the terms of the Maxey Archtops limited warranty.

Why humidity matters

All guitars made from solid wood will expand and contract as humidity and temperature change. This is normal and unavoidable.

Low humidity can cause:

  • Finish checking or hairline cracks
  • Wood shrinkage
  • Separation at glue joints
  • Sharp fret ends
  • Changes in action or neck relief
  • High humidity can cause:
    • Swelling of the top or back
    • Loss of clarity and projection
    • Glue joint stress
    • Action changes
  • Rapid temperature changes can also stress finish and glue joints, even when overall humidity is reasonable.

Recommended humidity range

For best results, instruments should be kept in an environment between 40 percent and 50 percent relative humidity, at typical room temperatures.

Short term fluctuations are normal, but prolonged exposure outside this range increases the risk of structural and cosmetic issues.

Winter months are especially challenging in many regions due to heated indoor air, which is often extremely dry even when the home feels comfortable.

Storage and daily care

  • When not in use, store the guitar in its hard case
  • Avoid leaving the instrument out on a stand for extended periods in dry or fluctuating environments
  • Keep the guitar away from heating vents, radiators, fireplaces, and direct sunlight
  • Avoid storing the instrument near exterior walls during extreme weather
  • Never leave the guitar in a car or unheated space

Using a room humidifier or an in case humidification system during dry seasons is strongly recommended.

A digital hygrometer placed in the room or case is the best way to monitor conditions accurately.

Travel and seasonal changes

During seasonal transitions, especially in winter, instruments may require additional care.

  • Allow the guitar to acclimate slowly when moving between environments
  • After cold weather shipping or transport, let the instrument sit in its case for several hours before opening
  • Expect minor setup changes seasonally, including neck relief and action

Finish checking during winter months is common on nitrocellulose finishes and is generally cosmetic in nature.

Maintenance expectations

Some changes over time are normal and not indicative of a defect, including:

  • Minor finish checking
  • Subtle changes in tone as the instrument acclimates
  • Seasonal setup adjustments
  • Cosmetic aging

Routine maintenance such as truss rod adjustments, setup work, and string changes are considered normal ownership responsibilities.

Final note

Maxey Archtops guitars are built to be played and enjoyed, but they require thoughtful care like any fine wood instrument.

Maintaining proper humidity and temperature is the single most important step an owner can take to protect their guitar and ensure long term stability.
