The Maxey Archtops RE1 is a contemporary hand-built jazz archtop rooted in traditional methods. The instrument features a fully hollow 17.5″ body with bent mahogany sides, a hand-carved mahogany top and back, and parallel bracing that gives it clarity, projection, and a focused midrange response. The body tapers into a violin-inspired recurve around the edges, giving the plates a sculpted, luthier-carved look reminiscent of fine bowed instruments. The satin finish highlights the grain with a warm, glowing, violin-esque depth.
The 630mm scale length (24.8″) comes directly from the world of romantic-era classical guitars. This slightly shorter scale reduces tension, enhances warmth, and makes complex voicings or chord-melody playing feel more fluid and intimate. Combined with the lightweight 7 lb build and fully hollow construction, the RE1 responds instantly to a lighter touch while still offering a controlled, articulate attack.
Ebony is used throughout the instrument: the fingerboard, tailpiece, bridge, pickguard, and knobs. The fingerboard carries the MA inlay at the 12th fret, representing Maxey Archtops. A floating neck pickup preserves the acoustic character of the body, and the simple volume and tone controls keep the focus on the guitarโs natural voice.
This RE1 is built for players who want the nuance, warmth, and immediacy of a traditional archtop, paired with modern comfort and a minimalist aesthetic.
